Welcome to 6.3

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to grade six! This is an amazing year where your child will continue develop independence, explore interests and learn about the world we live in. I will be teaching your child science, social studies and language arts this year. I am excited to get started!

Classroom Routines

Please encourage your child to bring a small water bottle and a healthy snack and lunch each day. Please label your water bottles, as they can easily get lost in the shuffle. On days when your child does not have PE, we will be taking advantage of our fabulous playground equipment and enjoying some outside activities. If students dress for the weather, they will be able to enjoy their time outdoors.

I will be emailing parents once per week in order to keep you updated in terms of assignments, projects and events. We have a classroom whiteboard calendar and I have a classroom google calendar set up on my classroom page. Students can refer to both of these to ensure they are up to date. I am leaving students to make the choice of what they would like to use in terms of a tool for organization and time management. Some students prefer a hard copy (agenda), some prefer using their digital devices and some choose to visit my digital calendar regularly. Please discuss these choices with your child and determine what their organizational plan will be.

Homework Expectations

For the classes I teach, I generally try to give the students as much class time to complete assignments as possible. However, as the due date approaches, your child may have some finishing up to do. If students are using their class time wisely, there should not be much homework assigned. I will post major assignments, projects, test and quiz dates on this site under the "Homework" tab. I give a lot of notice for due dates so students have ample time to prepare given their busy schedules. If you have questions regarding due dates, please refer to the applicable subject folder. Please have your child speak with me regarding conflicts prior to the due date if necessary.

Study Habits

Grade six is an important year in terms of developing good study habits. If students do not have assigned homework for the evening, they should be spending 15 – 20 minutes reviewing material covered in a subject area. The vocabulary in science and social studies is challenging. Regular review for short periods of time throughout the year will be extremely beneficial to your child at the end of the year when writing the Provincial Achievement Tests.

I also encourage you to have your child share their class work with you on a regular basis. That way, you will be able to ask questions and see how well they understand the material throughout a particular unit.

Parent Tips

I encourage you as parents/guardians to be actively involved in your child's school life.  I believe when parents and teachers work together, children can be successful in their learning.
